Davy Process Technology is a Johnson Matthey Company

NMP

We have developed a novel process for producing N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) from methylamine and gamma butyrolactone. Our process utilises a non-catalytic reaction of Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL) and Monomethylamine (MMA) with the separation by distillation of the product to produce solvent quality NMP. NMP technology is a natural combination and progression for both our BDO and Amine technologies.

N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone is a low toxicity stable polar solvent. It is widely used in extractive distillation for the recovery of materials such as butadiene and acetylene. As a powerful solvent, NMP is a useful cleaning material and is often used for degreasing and paint removal. The low toxicity of NMP makes it an attractive substitute for 1,1,1 trichloroethane which, being a chlorinated solvent, is gradually being withdrawn for use on environmental grounds.

The Davy Process Technology n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone process is a low press process, which has high feedstock utilisation and excellent product purity, is optimised integration of reaction and separation for low capital and operating costs and has a low environmental impact.
