Pre-Reforming - One Syngas

Catalytic Rich Gas (CRG) technology was the first commercial process to make the break from manufacturing Towns Gas from coal and take advantage of hydrocarbon distillates and LPG feedstocks. Since its first application in 1964 based on catalyst developed by British Gas we have continued to develop the technology.

Today, the insertion of a CRG pre-reformer into a syngas flowsheet provides the opportunity to make use of a number of potential process enhancements; amply demonstrated by the following examples:

  • A pre-reformer can be used to allow processing of heavy feedstocks.
  • The plant capacity of a new syngas plant the plant capacity can be increased with the same size of steam methane reformer.
  • A pre-reformer allows considerable flexibility with regard to the steam balance and energy savings.

Over 150 CRG systems have been licensed and about half use natural gas (or natural gas liquids) as a feedstock.
